London remembers Nijinsky
Science and culture
Tonight Russian and foreign ballet dancers will perform in London at the 8th annual Russian Ballet Icons Gala dedicated to famous Russian dancer and choreographer Vaclav Nijinsky.
Among them are soloists of the Russian Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theatres, the Paris Grand Opera, the Monte Carlo Ballet, the British Royal Ballet and the English National Ballet, and the Berlin State Opera.
The international company of dancers will perform fragments of ballets in which Nijinsky shone, such as Petrushka, La Sylphide, Scheherazade and The Afternoon of a Faun, as well as classical and modern pieces dedicated to Nijinsky.
The audience will also be able to see old documentary sequences.
Nijinsky was a partner of Matilda Kshesinskaya, Anna Pavlova and Tamara Karsavina. He was a soloist and choreographer of Les Ballets Russes (The Russian Ballets) directed by Sergei Diaghilev.
Traditionally, every event of this kind is dedicated to some important figure in the history of Russian ballet. In 2012 the ballet gala was dedicated to Anna Pavlova.
