Orthodox Christians start observing Great Lent

On Monday, Orthodox Christians start observing Great Lent that will last for a period of approximately seven weeks leading up to Easter Sunday that this year falls on May 5.
The purpose of Great Lent is to prepare the faithful to not only commemorate, but to enter into the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus.
Observance of Great Lent is characterized by abstinence from certain foods, intensified private and public prayer, self-examination, confession and repentance.
The foods traditionally abstained from are meat, eggs, milk, cheese , wine, and oil.
