Venezuelans burn effigies of presidential candidates
World
The ancient tradition of burning effigies of Judas on Easter in highly politicized Venezuela as it stands on the brink of presidential elections has acquired new format, RIA reports.
The effigies this time were likenesses of the two major candidates for president - Nicolas Maduro and Henrique Capriles.
In Caracas, pro-government activists organized the burning of an effigy depicting opposition candidate Capriles, in company with such sins as imperialism and slander.
The opposition was quick to respond: in the north of Caracas just one effigy was burnt, but with three heads – likenesses of Maduro, Interior Minister Nestor Reverol, and former Vice President Jorge Rodriguez.
