Medvedev to chair Baltic Sea Action Summit in St.Pete

Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev is to chair the Baltic Sea Action Summit (BSAS), which opens in St. Petersburg on Friday.
On the eve of the event the Prime Minister published an article in which he stressed that the social and economic development of the Baltic region must be carried out taking into consideration environmental tasks.
“Taking care of the environment is the area of inter-stet relations which has no alternative to cooperation”, the Prime Minister said.
The Conference of the Heads of Government of the Baltic Sea States is expected to adopt a joint statement highlighting the importance of the Baltic Sea environmental efforts of all actors and supporting the continuation of the Baltic Sea Action Summit process.
Baltic Sea Action Summit (BSAS) process launched by Finland aims primarily to speed up the implementation of the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan and the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. It also focuses on deepening cooperation between public and private actors to improve the state of the Baltic Sea environment.
