Franz Beckenbauer has apologised for calling Gigi Buffon “a pensioner” after his performance against Bayern Munich. “I didn’t want to offend him, but...”

The honorary President of Bayern made the comments after Juventus lost 2-0 in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final.

His suggestion Buffon “looked like a pensioner” when trying to stop the two goals sparked outrage in Italy.

“I apologise to Buffon if he felt offended by my words, as it was not my intention,” Beckenbauer told Bild.

“However, I remain convinced of my opinion: Buffon should’ve been able to block the first and second goals.”
