Gorbachev awarded gold medal by the German CDU Pensioners Party

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev was awarded the gold medal by the German Union of Pensioners Party in the Christian Democratic Union.

This award is given "for achievements in the field of reconciliation and understanding between nations." It is expected that the former President and Nobel Peace Prize winner will receive the medal from the hands of the party leader, Chancellor Angela Merkel. The ceremony is scheduled for April 22. Earlier, 82-year-old Mikhail Gorbachev refused to attend the funeral of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, citing health reasons.
