Russia marks Day of Local Self-Government

Russia for the first time marks Day of Local Self-Government on Sunday, in line with last year’s presidential decree on increasing the role and significance of institution of local self-government and the development of democracy and a civil society.

On April 21, 1875, Russian Empress Catherine II issued a grant-charter to several Russian cities in a move that that marked the beginning of the development of the Russian legislation on local self-government.
