Rio Ferdinand looks set to celebrate Manchester United’s title triumph safe in the knowledge that he will still be at Old Trafford next season.
The England defender is out of contract in the summer but Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed on Sunday he wants the 34-year-old to sign a new deal, and revealed Ferdinand is so intent on staying he is already lining up opponents for a potential testimonial early next season.
Ferdinand arrived at Old Trafford from Leeds in 2002 and United boss Ferguson believes the Londoner has his heart set on a 12th year at the club.
‘I have spoken to Rio,’ he said. ‘I would imagine the best thing for him would be to stay but at this moment in time he is more concerned about getting an opponent for his testimonial game.
