Venezuelan authorities are ready to retaliate in various policy areas and will even take economic measures, if the United States imposes sanctions on the South American country for refusing to recount the results of its recent presidential elections. This was announced on Monday by Elias Jaua the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela.
Jaua said that if the U.S. resorts to economic sanctions or other measures Venezuela will take appropriate and necessary actions in the trade, economic, energy and political spheres.
The statements by the Foreign Minister of Venezuela came in response to statements made by U.S. State Department official Roberta Jacobson, who was recently interviewed on CNN and did not confirm nor deny the possibility of imposing sanctions against Caracas.
Observers have noted that Venezuela is a major oil supplier to the United States and that according to figures from 2012 the volume of oil delivered to the United States reached 900,000 barrels per day.
