Vladimir Putin declares 2014 as ‘Year of Culture’ in Russia

President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree designating 2014 as the Year of Culture in the Russian Federation. The document has been published on the official website of the President of Russia.
The President resolved to hold a Year of Culture in 2014 in Russia in order to focus the public’s attention on issues of cultural development, preserving cultural heritage and the role of Russian culture in the world. Instructions on creating the organizing committee have been given to the Government.
Valentina Matviyenko, the speaker of the Federation Council, was the one who came up with the idea of holding the Year of Culture in Russia.
