Egg fossil of extinct elephant bird sold at London auction

A unique fossilized egg of the elephant bird, extinct for about four centuries, was sold on Wednesday at London’s Christie's auction for over 100 thousand dollars.
One such egg could hold about 120 common chicken eggs.
The elephant bird inhabited the island of Madagascar, but was completely wiped out by hunters.
As scientists believe, apparently representatives of this species resembled modern ostriches, but reached a height of about 5.3 meters and weighed about 500 pounds.
