Russia marks Day of Parliamentarianism for the first time

Russia marks Day of Parliamentarianism today for the first time. The draft law introducing the commemorative date was submitted by the speakers of both the upper and lower house of the Russian Parliament, Valentina Matviyenko and Sergei Naryshkin, last year.
It was on April 27th 1906 that Russia’s first parliament, the State Duma, got down to work at the Tauride Palace in St. Petersburg.
According to Naryshkin, the 1906 Duma proved Russia’s first ever democratic body of power, TASS reported.
In the run-up to Parliamentarianism Day, lawmakers, scientists, and experts in the constitutional law organized a series of events that covered the history of representative bodies, as well as the problems that such bodies are facing today.
Government Ministers, judges of the court of last resort and prominent politicians delivered a set of lectures at the Duma on the development of parliamentarianism in Russia.
