In a poll conducted by the Tokyo daily Mainichi, two thirds of the respondents cautioned the government against spoiling relations with Russia by pressing territorial claims to the four islands of the South Kuril group.

The islands became Russian under the international agreements signed at the end of WWII. Russia rejects Japan’s claims and proposes joint economic projects in the South Kurils area.
