A locomotive travelled 17 kilometres without a driver before it derailed and rammed into a sheep paddock in Indonesia's Central Java province, reports said Monday.
No one was hurt in the incident Sunday, the state Antara news agency reported.
"We don't know why it happened," said Surono, a spokesman for the state-run railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia.
"We will question officers who were in charge of the locomotive at that time," he said.
The locomotive took off while being checked with its engine running, and passed two stations before it crashed at a farm.
