Over 140 hopefuls bid for Iran presidency
Iran
More than 140 potential candidates have filed their bids for the Iranian presidency over the past couple of days.
Under the Iranian laws, the head of state is elected every four years on an alternative basis by a direct and secret ballot.
A candidate must be born in Iran, have Iranian citizenship, possess administrative skills, have an unblemished reputation, be a devout Muslim and adhere to the principles of the Islamic Republic and the country’s official religion.
The Supervisory Committee checks whether a candidate meets all those requirements.
More than 470 officially registered candidates ran for the top post in the last presidential election held in 2009.
