Itar-Tass - The strongest earthquake in 10 years hit north-eastern Iran on January 19.

The epicenter of the earthquake, measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, was located 10 kilometers from the city of Nishapur. In a number of settlements dilapidated dwellings were destroyed.
Iran is located in an area of high seismic activity. In December 2003, as a result of a magnitude 6.6 quake, the ancient city of Bam in the southeast was completely destroyed. More than 30,000 were killed in that quake.
