UN Secretary-General thanks Russia for joint Syria initiative with U.S.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon thanked Russia for the joint initiative with the United States to convene an international conference on Syria, said the official UN spokesman Martin Nesirky, RIA reported.

Earlier this week during a visit to Moscow by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Russia and the United States proposed an international conference to bring to the negotiating table Syrian authorities and the opposition.
Nesirky also stressed that "the United Nations is ready to play its role in helping achieve a peaceful settlement in Syria."
