US President Obama hails Pakistan's poll as 'milestone' to democracy

US President Barack Obama has hailed Pakistan’s parliamentary election as a "milestone" for the country’s "democratic process."
"By conducting competitive campaigns, freely exercising your democratic rights, and persevering despite intimidation by violent extremists, you have affirmed a commitment to democratic rule," said a statement released by the White House.
Saturday’s poll was handily won by Nawaz Sharif, who was toppled by a military coup during his last term as Prime Minister in 1999.
