The Armenian body politic is no longer united in one protest format - political analyst Edgar Vardanyan.

"The Armenian body politic is no longer united in one protest format, as it was in 2008," the Armenian Center for National and International Studies analyst Edgar Vardanyan stated during a press conference on Monday.

“There are several opposition forces, whose tasks have not seemed to change, but the change in the emphasis is apparent,” he added.  

As per the analyst, the key challenge, which the opposition raises, is making a change in the electoral system and passing to political party list (proportional) elections.  

“John Prescott [the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Co-Rapporteur on Armenia] was in Armenia recently, and he stated that the country is not in as dire a situation as before. In fact, there is no political crisis as well, and the opposition’s main issue is the electoral system,” Vardanyan stressed.    

In his view, however, this does not mean the opposition is discarding its previous issues. “But they are attempting to function within the framework of Realpolitik, comprehending that not all objectives can fully materialize. So, in the upcoming elections they will function along the lines of their capabilities,” Edgar Vardanyan concluded.
