Georgia’s former Prime Minister arrested

The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia has detained the former Prime Minister of Georgia, who is now the General Secretary of the "United National Movement".
According to the statement made by the prosecutor following the questioning, the case concerns two episodes regarding corruption surrounding Merabishvili.
He was charged under Articles 164, 182 and 332 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.
The first episode dates back to 2012, when as prime minister, during the parliamentary elections, he, along with the former Minister of Labour, Health and Social Affairs Zurab Tchiaberashvili illegally registered over a thousand UNM activists to work on the registration of the unemployed. The workers all took part in campaigning for the party and received 5.2 million lari from the state budget for those purposes.
The second episode involves a luxurious villa in the village of Kvariati owned by the International Investment Company LLC. The investigation proved that Merabishvili forcibly took the cottage in 2009 and used it until 2013.
Tchiaberashvili was arrested along with Merabishvili. According to the charges, he faces an imprisonment for a term of 7-12 years.
