Georgia’s former PM charged with crimes under 3 Criminal Code sections

Georgia’s Prosecutor-General’s Office officially charged the former Prime Minister Vano Merabishvili on Tuesday night with perpetrating crimes under three sections of the Criminal Code.
He is specifically charged with voter bribing, embezzlement of government funds, and abuse of office. He may get as many as 12 years behind bars for the crimes in question.
The former Public Health Minister, currently the Kakheti Region Governor, Zurab Chiaberashvili, is also facing corruption charges. The former Prime Minister was detained in the city of Kutaisi yesterday.
45-year old Merabishvili led the Georgian government in 2012. He is now the general secretary of the United National Movement party, led by Mikhail Saakashvili, Trend reported.
