The Armenian authorities agree that corruption is a big evil impeding democratic processes, a member of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) has said.
Ara Hovannisyan told reporters on Tuesday that the government is now taking steps to combat corruption.
''The Government has adopted anti-corruption strategies. The achievements in the sphere are on-going,'' he said, pointing out to the reforms in government and local self-administration bodies, state cadastre and tax services.
Hovannisyan added that the authorities in Armenia never avoid recording the existing gaps and taking measures taken to bridge them.
Speaking further on the issue, Bagrat Asatryan of the opposition Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnakstuyun stressed demonstrating promote legislative reforms and public participation in anti-corruption efforts.
“Certain measures have been implemented in relation to the latter two, but they were formal. A person’s will is expressed only when it has to be demonstrated. The [amended] Electoral Code said nothing about eliminating the risks of political corruption. Despite the parliament’s efforts, the authorities did nothing,” he said.
