Nikol Pashinyan blames RA chief of police Vova Gasparyan in journalist Hayk Gevorgyan`s arrest.

The arrest of reporter Hayk Gevorgyan, managing editor of Haykanan Zhamanak daily, is an order by Armenian Police Chief Vladimir (Vova) Gasparyan, says the editor-in-chief of the opposition newspaper.

"Only a person like Vladimir Gasparyan could order such a thing. Vladimir Gasparyan has some health problems and I advise that he undergo a medical examination within the framework of this case," said Nikol Pashinyan.

Among the reasons for the reporter's arrest, Pashinyan cited a January 13 article published in Haykanan Zhamanak. In the article entitled "And God said, Vova," Hayk Gevorgyan presented a conversation between the chief of Armenian police and reporters.

Another reason for the arrest could be Gevorgyan's article about Gasparyan's luxurious car. After reading the article, the chief of the Armenian police decided to have revenge upon the reporter and plotted a traffic accident from which Gevorgyan allegedly fled away.

"How could a person who is on a wanted list go to work for ten days in the same car in which he reportedly took to flight, attend the sittings of executive and legislative bodies, take interviews, write articles and go unnoticed by police?" said Pashinyan.

The editor-in-chief of Haykakan Zhamanak daily told reporters that Hayk Gevorgyan was ‘chained' in the morning by plain-clothed officers who drove him in an unknown direction.

According to Pashinyan, Gasparyan would not have ordered the arrest of Gevorgyan without consulting his chief -Serzh Sargsyan.

"We shall do our best to have Hayk released. We expect the support of media representatives who are concerned about Hayk's arrest," said Nikol Pashinyan.
