Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates St Sargis Day.
Society
The Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates today the holiday of St Sargis, the patron of the young and those in love.
This is a day when young people pray to the saint patron asking him to make their voices heard by God.
Apart from traditional prayers and church masses, Armenians also have customs related to the day. On the night before the holiday the young eat a salty pancake, expecting to see their destined groom or bride in their dream.
St Sargis is said to have lived between 285 and 337 in Persia. The legend says that the Christian commander was killed by the Persian king for refusal to change his faith. In the fifth century, Saint Mesrop Mashtots delivered the relics of Surb Sargis from Persia to Karbi-Ushi a village near Ashtarak.
Later a church in his honor was built on the site.
