Serzh Sargsyan won't express his view on Hayk Gevorgyan's arrest until the court ruling, but hopes that there will be a speedy decision.
This is what Serzh Sargsyan said during the event organized by the Women's Council of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) in Tsakhkadzor.
Panorama.am reports that a group of women Republicans talked to Serzh Sargsyan before the meeting began.
President of the RPA Women's Council Hermine Naghdalyan particularly said: "Mr. President, yesterday we received news regarding journalist Hayk Gevorgyan's arrest, and the police have also released details.
Before this meeting, we, women Republicans were discussing what happened and we decided to express our view against keeping the journalist in prison. We ask the law-enforcement authorities to take our opinion into account in this matter, if possible."
In response, Serzh Sargsyan mentioned: "The state bodies implement certain functions every day, including the fight against violations of the law and the revelation of those who are suspected of committing those violations. This activity in itself can objectively contain restrictions on the rights of a person. In order for those restrictions to be substantiated, there are certain legal restrictive procedures within the frameworks of which a body, in this case the court, has to determine how substantiated the police officers' actions are. Such issues should be solved in this format in any legal state. As far as Hayk Gevorgyan's case is concerned, I won't express my view until the court's decision, and I hope the court will take a decision soon."
