Four years ago this day, Armenians became rest assured that dismal events can happen.
Citizens of Yerevan woke up to bloody clashes on the morning of the first day of spring in 2008.
On the last day of winter, the police prepared for an operation that would remind everyone of sadness and melancholy on the first day of every spring in Armenia.
The first clash took place at 6:20 a.m. on March 1 when police forces attacked peaceful demonstrators participating in a sitting strike at Freedom Square with bludgeons.
The police officers went after the beaten demonstrators with bludgeons until they reached Myasnikyan Statue and the Circus. Even passers-by who happened to be near the Opera that morning were attacked by the police.
There would be serious resistance in the evening, but the most horrible was at the end of the day when central Yerevan reminded one of a war zone where the sounds of gunshots were deafening the peaceful rally participants' calls for tranquility.
Armenians killed the Armenians who were fighting for justice, trying to defend their votes and exercise their constitutional right to form a legitimate government.
The events led to ten victims, more than 500 injured, a 20-day period of uncertainty, fear, threats and strict restrictions on civil rights under the name of state of emergency. The past four years saw the struggle to reveal the murders of March 1 and bring the culprits to justice, but none of that has been implemented to this day.
Today, four years after the March 1 tragedy, nobody has been brought to justice for the murders of the ten citizens.
No matter how much the Armenian authorities and the Council of Europe declare that the page of March 1 has been turned over, it hasn't because most of the families of the victims and the society still have questions that remain unanswered.
Why isn't there a proper investigation being led to reveal those responsible for the crime of March 1-2? Why haven't the people involved in the "operation" of pressuring and dispersing the peaceful demonstrators through the illegal use of the RA Armed Forces been punished to this day?
One of the victims, Tigran Abgaryan was in compulsory military service. Why wasn't there a discussion on who gave the command for him to appear in central Yerevan? Who ordered to transfer the conscript from the military unit to central Yerevan? These are just few of the questions that remain unanswered four years after the tragedy.
