Armenian sculptor Levon Tokmajyan has shared his impressions of the March 1, 2008 post-electoral turmoil in Yerevan.
At a news conference on Thursday, the artist said he wouldn’t wish tragedies like that to happen ever again.
“Those were tragic events. There’s nothing worse than seeing Armenian people stand up against one another. The life of every Armenian is dear to us. But that was nothing more than a race for power” he said.
Tokmajyan regretted to note that the Armenian nation is very credulous about any issue.
“Every time I leave Armenia I see we have a week [country]. So what to do to make it a powerful state? It is first of all necessary for the people to be strong, but that problem has its roots in the social circumstances of the people,” he said, noting that politicians nowadays think more about paving their way to parliament instead of doing their work.
Artur Atanesyan, a political analyst also attending the news conference, characterized the March 1 events as a major disadvantage for Armenia.
“This first of all shows that human rights are not protected here. The society and the authorities must be able to communicate with one another,” he said, adding that conflicts very often stem from the lack of contacts.
