The environmental activists seeking to dismantle the kiosks in Yerevan’s Mashtots Park have now gathered in the area to carry out their plan.
The group was earlier reported to be planning the dismantlement of the structures at 1:00pm on Saturday. In a letter to Chief of Police Vladimir Gasparyan, the activists called for action to ensure the protection of public order and the security of the people expected to work in the area.
The crowd is growing gradually. Several lawmakers of the opposition Heritage party (Anahit Bakhshyan, Armen Marrtirosyan and Zaruhi Postanjyan), and members of Sardarapat Movement recently joined the activiststs.
Zhirayr Sefilyan, the founder of Sardarapat, said though he's not in the list of the activitsts expected to work in the park, he will join the activities if necessary.
The environmentalists are chanting "Cooperation", "Green and Clean Armenia", "The Park is Ours" etc.
The area is under the surveillance of policemen whose number tops the protesters. They are going not to allow the dismantlement of the kiosk under any circmumstances.
“It’s forty days we have been calling for obedience to the law. We will not allow any violation of the legal order,” police official Robert Melkonyan said.
The Armenian Police had earlier issued a statement warning of the possible consequences of any attempts to dismantle the constructions. It said particularly that the plan is not protected by freedom of assembly and may be characterized as an infringement, if carried into action.
