Twenty-two out of the 181 candidates nominated in different constituencies across Armenia have quit the parliament race to be held on May 6. There remain 157 candidates to run.
The following contenders were reported to have withdrawn their candidacies: Yervand Chilingaryan (Electoral District No. 40); Samvel Samvelyan (No. 31); Senik Elvinyan (No. 30); Grigor Danielyan (No. 29), Manuk Hakobyan (No. 27); Hakob Hakobyan (No. 26); Masis Melkonyan (No. 24); Vahagn Hakobyan (No. 22), Gagik Margaryan (No. 21); Henzel Arakelyan (No. 18); Jonik Abrahamyan (No. 17); Edward Madatyan (No. 11); Raffi Hovhannisyan (No. 7), Albert Sargsyan and Hayk Hayrapetyan (No. 2), Alexander Hakobyan (No. 14), Atom Petrosyan (No. 20), Edward Chatinyan (No. 32), Surik Grigoryan (No. 36), Artak Sisakyan (No. 37), Artak Sahakyan (No. 39).
The majority of the above candidates were self-nominated.
The founder and leader of the opposition Heritage party, Raffi Hovhannisyan withdrew his candidacy from the majority constituency No. 7 to avoid a contest with the Haykakan Zhamanak newspaper’s editor-in-chief, Nikol Pashinyan, who represents the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC).
Some of the nominees already have the status of registered candidates. So far, only one person – Khachatur Sukiasyan of the Armenian National Congress – has been rejected on account of not having permanently resided in Armenia in the past five years (as a second notice by the Passport and Visa Department of the Police suggested).
