Chairman of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) and President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan held a public meeting in Yerevan’s Erebuni community on Tuesday as start of the party’s election campaign.
He spoke of the ruling party’s achievements and plans.
“We have neither concealed our faults nor exaggerated our achievements. We have worked much as power is first of all hard work not enjoying yourself,” the Armenian leader said.
He spoke of Armenia’s foreign policy, pointed out Armenia’s initiatives and balanced steps.
“We intend to go on and be more active,” Serzh Sargsyan said.
Armenia’s domestic policy has been implemented “with a clear conscience” to prevent any hostility, the Armenian leader stressed.
Serzh Sargsyan promises encouragement of political pluralism and upholding of the tradition of not hunting for enemies within the nation.
The opposition is a guarantee of the authorities’ discretion and better work, and it must be perceived as such.
“I do not say I like criticism. But we must be tolerant because we are authorities,” the Armenian leader said.
Radical steps have been and are being made to form a rule-of-law state in Armenia.
“Nothing can stand the pressure of our faith, our strength and experience. In a few years we will ensure entirely new standards of life for Armenian citizens,” President Serzh Sargsyan said.
Armenia’s economy managed to cope with the global economic crisis and prevent disastrous consequences.
On the other hand, the Armenian leader admits the authorities failed to ensure economic growth that would prove beneficial for most of the country’s population.
“No one in Armenia is prepared for that better than we. We have changed our attitude to industry,” the Armenian president said.
He also touched on environmental and urban development problems.
“We are standing near the monument [to David of Sasun] we are proud of. We are proud of all that is shaping the aspect of Yerevan, our city.” The Armenian president promises a legal ban on any construction if it is not in harmony with the Armenian capital’s architectural aspect.
“We do not have to convince each other that we are living in a good country. We say we have a lot of unsettled problems. But we have talented people willing to do their best for reforms,” the Armenian leader said.
In this context, he stressed the importance of will and faith.
The Armenian leader called on the local residents to vote for the RPA candidate Mher Sedrakyan.
