A massive earthquake struck off Indonesia's Sumatra Island on Wednesday, prompting a Pacific-wide tsunami alert.
According to initial reports, the quake's magnitude was 8.9. The earthquake struck under the sea off Indonesia's northern Aceh province, BBC reports.
The tremor was felt as far away as Singapore, Thailand and India.
The region is regularly hit by earthquakes. The province was near the epicenter of a devastating quake in 2004 that triggered a tsunami across the Indian Ocean, killing 170,000 people.
