Armenia's human rights defender has condemned the initiative to organize an Azerbaijani film festival in Armenia, criticizing in the meantime yesterday’s attack against several rights defenders of the Vanadzor based Helsinki Civil Assembly.
According to a statement by the organization, some of the city’s residents protesting against the festival had hurled stones at the organization’s office yesterday, causing damage to its property and injuring one of the employees.
“Violence against anyone is unquestionably condemnable, but it is far more so when committed against individuals tasked with a special mission, including rights defenders and lawyers,” Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan has said in a statement.
He called upon the public, rights defenders and law enforcement agencies to take adequate measures to respond to the violence and hold those guilty accountable.
He further voiced his protest against the initiative.
“I am against the screening of Azerbaijani films in Armenia, especially now that the Azerbaijani snipers kill our brothers and the nation demonstrates hatred for us, and especially having in view the Azerbaijani president’s violent conduct that perplexed and angered the world community,” Andreasyan said.
“We consider ourselves Europeans. Our desires are definitely directed to Europe. And our Christian values have always pushed us to philanthropy and tolerance. It is not appropriate to a real Christian, humane Armenian and a law-enforcer guiding himself by the letter of law to demonstrate indifference to such unacceptable attack and fail to promptly resolve it and punish the culprits,” he added.
