The situation in Yerevan's Mashtots Park is very tense. Around fifty environmental activists attempting to dismantle the kiosks in Mashtots Park have met the police resistance.
After the first clash, the team tried to broke into the park, but the police managed to push them aside.
A group of young protesters is expressing solidarity with the team, by chanting slogans from distance.
Deputy Chief of Yerevan Police Ruben Melkonyan has asked the ‘dismantlers’ to refrain from violence.
One of the activists was injured in the hand while attempting to pull the iron bars.
Several public and political figures, including Zhirayr Sefilyan (Sardarapat Movement), ethnographer Hranush Kharatyan and others are in the park to back the activists.
The environmentalists pitched a tent, with a group of police officers impeding their efforts. The police removed the tent, but the activists managed to set up a new one.
LURER.com correspondent informs that one of the environmental activists, Bayandur Poghosyan, who had declared a hunger strike against the construction of the kiosks, suddenly felt bad. While the activists were trying to transfer him to hospital, his condition normalized. Regardless the gender, the police carry out violent actions against environmentalists. The clashes between them continue.
The work of journalists was also impeded. The police officers forcibly removed some of the activists away from the tent but still 7 activists are sitting around the tent, protecting the area.
Minutes ago LURER.com correspondent informed that the situation relatively calmed down in the park. Some of the activists received light injuries.
