Artavazd Vardanyan, the former chief of the parliament committee tasked with conducting a probe into March 1 post-electoral tragic developments in Yerevan, has declared a one-week hunger strike outside the Central Election Commission (CEC).
But instead of demanding a free and fair election, he was for some reason making calls on the society and intellectual circles to concentrate their attention on possible ways towards creating an alternative regime.
As for elections, he does not expect them to promote any changes, as he considers the process yet another motive aimed at stiring up activeness among the people. In the meantime, he admits Sardarapat Movement’s proposal on changing the regime.
“The situation won’t improve from one election to another as elections do not serve as tool for changing the system. They [the authorities] have created rights that can potentially reproduce themselves. It makes absolutely no sense to go to the polls in such circumstances. The struggle is not between ideas, but rather, between the worse and the worst,” he said.
Vardanyan then compared his protest with the struggle against the kiosks in Yerevan’s Mashtots Park. Vardanyan was among the activists campaigning for the protection of the green areas in the park.
