Armenian parliament elects its Speaker.
Political
The only candidate nominated to head Armenia’s new parliament is the ex-speaker, Hovik Abrahamyan, who quit his post ahead of the May 6 polls to run the ruling Republican Party’s campaign headquarters.
Abrahamyan’s candidacy was proposed by Galust Sahakyan, the head of the Republican Party faction in parliament.
Addressing the members of the fifth National Assembly, Abrahamyan thanked his colleagues for trusting him the speaker’s position.
Hovik Abrahamyan regrets that the opposition Armenian National Congress and Heritage Party MPs have not attended first session of the new Parliament.
“But I will organize our future work in such way that everything will be in an environment of mutual agreement,” Abrahamyan told news reporters at the NA.
Also, he informed that the country’s president—and ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) leader—instructed all RPA NA Faction members to take active part in parliamentary activities.
