The roof of Yerevan’s Covered Market has collapsed without any intervention, according Samval Aleksanyan, a Republican Party lawmaker, who was earlier reported to have purchased the territory.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the businessman MP said that the building will resume its former design after the current renovation.
“I am not demolishing it. The Seismic [Protection Service] has issued documents confirming that the building’s back-wall was in a poor condition and collapsed itself. So we will restore it completely,” he said.
Alexanyan promised that the place will keep serving as a market following the repairs.
“There will be a market there; we are digging for more grounds to build a parking lot,” he added.
Alexanyan purchased the Covered Market from Multi Group company last year. The building is currently under repairs. The media had earlier reported that the businessman lawmaker is planning to open a Yerevan City Hall supermarket on the territory.
Several civil groups launched recently an active campaign to protect the market.
