Either US is Incapable of Influencing on Sides or US and International Community are not Very Interested in What will Happen: Stepan Safaryan
Armenia
We know that US State Secretaries have not frequently or at all visited Armenia in the past. The first visit was in 2011 and the second – this year. This probably has certain meaning because otherwise the Secretary wouldn’t visit without major reasons. Such an opinion was made by a Heritage member Stepan Safaryan.
In his words, the visit started after the signing of the Armenian-Turkish protocols, which comes to prove how important the opening of the border is for the US. According to Safaryan, this is not the only interest in the region but is quite significant.
“During the visit, in the statements of the US State Secretary we have noticed that she values the continuity of the process,” he said.
The panelist mentioned that the geography of Clinton’s visit to the region – the three countries of South Caucasus and Turkey, probably means something.
“When the world’s concern is the nuclear project of Iran, when Germany gives aircraft carriers to Israel, when chaos dominates in Syria, the US cannot ignore even Armenia,” said Safaryan.
Safaryan has certain worries that on the days of Clinton’s visit to the region, the tension on the frontline reaches unprecedented degrees. And the visit hasn’t tempered the situation.
“There are two reasons. Either the US is not able to influence on the sides and we have an uncontrollable neighbor, or the international community and the US are not interested in what will happen, even if it turns into a local collision,” said Safaryan.
