Protecting One of the Olderst Buildings of Our City: House of Afrikyans Being Destroyed
Armenia
The House of Afrikyans located at Teryan 11 address is a historic monument-building that is under threat of destruction. Afrikyans were one of the oldest and famous families of Yerevan and Yerevan owes them a lot. Afrikyans were members of the city Duma; owned various factories. Due to Afrikyans for the first time potable water pipelines were installed in Yerevan in 1911. And today the same water loosens the fundament of the house of Afrikyans. The House of Afrikyans and the adjacent territory were considered public and historic monuments by the decision of the government and the ownership rights were granted to Dvin Holding LTD (its current successor is Millennium Constructions LTD). By offering compensations to the residents of the building the company forced them destroy their old apartments. As a result, the building has become weak and needs to be restored.
At present, the House of Afrikyans is buried in garbage. Today, at 6:30 p.m. citizens concerned with the future of the building will go there to clean the garbage. The statement released by the group reads:
Dear friends,
On Monday at 6:30 p.m. we are going to clean the House of Afrikyans.
As you know, by the decision of the government this historic-cultural building should be destroyed (NEVER) and instead a new business corporation should be built instead and no one knows when this house will be reconstructed in some other location. Yu also know that many other buildings have come to the same fate. And none of those was rebuilt. It’s enough now…
Today the then-luxurious House of Afrikyans is turned into dumpster. On Monday we are all going there to clean the garbage.
We’d like to remind the government and business owners that we haven’t forgotten our historic values and will protect those till the end.
