Education Committee of Knesset Discusses Armenia Genocide Recognition

On June 12, on the occasion of the 97th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide a discussion was initiated in the Israeli Parliament – Knesset. Meretz party chairwoman Zehava Gal-On initiated the Knesset discussion.
Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin said that Israel has a moral obligation to remember the murder of 1,5 million Armenians at the hands of the Turks, but warned that the issue should not be turned into an attack on the Turkish government of today. Rivlin also added that after experiencing the Holocaust the organizers thought that the world would be silent about the manslaughter as in the case of Armenians.
Delegates of seven parties of Knesset spoke positively on recognition of the Armenian Genocide, The discussion also hosted members of the Israeli government. They mentioned that the Israeli government is principally not against the recognition of the Genocide and expressed hope that the decisions on the matter will continue.
At the end of the discussion it was agreed to continue the discussion on the recognition of the Genocide in the framework of the Education Committee of Knesset.
