So was Public Demand of Rural Communities: Naira Zohrabyan on Voting for Sevan Lake Bill
Armenia
We have voted for the law on Sevan Lake because so was the public demand of rural communities. The Secretary of the Prosperous Armenia parliamentary faction Naria Zohrabyan told Lurer.com about this.
“Residents of various rural communities have told us during our meetings that the issue of irrigation is very serious and the reserves are very scarce. The consumers themselves urged the PAP to vote for this bill,” mentioned Zohrabyan and added that they had met with the rural residents of Aragatsotn, Lori, Syunik, Tavoush and Ararat marzes.
She informed that they had also met with environmental organizations. According to her, the opinions of these groups are not unanimous.
“There were environmental organizations that definitely claimed that the drainage of Sevan would create serious challenges and there were also the ones, who thought that the anticipated volume of water drainage wouldn’t harm the ecology and the lake,” said Zohrabyan.
The PAP Secretary believes that if the issue of irrigation water wasn’t solved people would starve and would start to “join the other groups that abandon Armenia.” In the meantime, Zohrabyan promises that she understands and respects the opinion and cautions of those environmental organizations that are worried because of serious challenges of Sevan Lake. TO our question whether they didn’t have concerns about receiving controversial opinions while voting for the bill, Zohrabyan replied,
“No, we have voted after considering the opinion and voice of our supports and the people who voted for us. If they told us there is no need for drainage then we would surely vote against the bill.”
