Uruguay Government to Cultivate Marihuana

Uruguay Government intends to engage in cultivation of marihuana, reports Reuters.
By preliminary calculation 27 tons of marihuana per year is required to meet the demands of 3 million population. 100 hectares area is planned to allocate for marihuana plantations.
The Government will start implementing the program as soon as the proposal is approved by the Senate. Earlier, the use of light drugs was legalized in Uruguay, however its sale is banned.
By legalizing use of marihuana , the Uruguay Government hopes to diminish the crime rate. They believe that black market is more dangerous for the country than light drugs.
In case the new law is approved, the cultivation activities will start in September, 2012.
The product will be purchased by private companies under the government control. Only the registered users will be able to buy marihuana and not more than 30 grams per month. Its sale to foreigners will be banned.
