Armenian Curch is Celebrating Vardavar Today
Society
Today the Armenian Apostolic church is celebrating Vardavar, or in other words Transfiguration of Christ.
Vardavar is celebrated 98 days after the Easter, the period between June 28 and August 1.
Linguistically the word “Vardavar” is composed of the words “Vard” (rose) and “Var” (rise) and means sprinkled with water. Vardavar was celebrated by pagan Armenians, that’s why the pagan customs have also been preserved – sprinkling water on each other, throwing doves in the air. Pagan Armenians connected it with the Armenian mythology goddess of water, love, fruiting and beauty Astghik; she was given roses, doves were thrown in the air and they were sprinkling water on one another.
