Armenian Government intends to reconsider its decision to raise from 17 to 18 years the minimum age at which women in Armenia are allowed to marry.
During today’s Government meeting Premier Minister Sargsyan said that Yezidi community had addressed the Government asking to reduce the minimum marriage age for women to 16.
“I was told that in Russia women are allowed to get married starting from 14 and there are no legal restrictions. I think it is necessary to discuss the issue with the ministries of health, education and science, as well as labor and social affairs. The issue must be studied thoroughly. If people are getting married at this age in real life, we will intrude upon their lifestyle,” he said.
Last month Armenian Government approved a bill to raise the minimum marriage for women to 18.
