Financial Times: Syrian war may end badly for Turkey
World
Syria’s collapse demonstrates the deep cracks, on which the influence of Turkey in the territory is based. The consequences may be bad not only for Turkey, but also for the West, which needs a stable ally in the Islamic world, French Financial Times writes.
Though slowly, but with clear steps, the Kurds stated control over north-east Syria, and Ankara begins to realize that its worst nightmare - the Kurdish Federation, which doesn’t recognize the existing state borders, turns into a reality. It is a threat to the existence of the state, for the Turkish elite. 13 million Kurds live in Turkey. The generation of the embryo of the Kurdish state in the territory of Kurdish autonomy in Iraq and in the Syrian “liberated” areas may result in Turkish separation into large pieces
Ankara, in particular, is concerned about the strengthening of the Democratic Union Party of Syria (PYD) - the loyal ally of the Kurdistan Workers’ party (PKK), which is at war with Turkey during the last 30 months. PKK makes a full use of opportunities arising from the civil war in Syria. A number of major attacks have been conducted in south-east Turkey in the last few weeks, as a result of which dozens of Turkish soldiers died..
At the same time Turkey is not able to influence on the situation: Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s attempts to “make friends” with the leader of Iraq Kurdistan- Massoud Barzani, were in vain. Barzani's response to the Erdogan’s flirt was the organization of the Kurdish coalition in Syria, which is against the regime of Asaad. The driving force of this coalition is PYD.
