Today is the International Day of Older Persons. So do not forget to congratulate your friends and relatives and wish them a long life.
Demographic revolution is on its way of spreading all over the world, reports the official website of World Health Organization (WHO). Today there are about 600 million elderly in the world. They are 60 or above. In fact, this index is to be duplicated until 2025. So, reaching up to 2 billion in 2050, the majority of them lives in developing countries.
UN official website writes, that October 1 has been declared as the International Day of Older People in accordance with the resolution of UN General Assembly on December 10 of 1990.
This was preceded by initiatives such as the Vienna International Plan of Action on Aging, which was adopted in World Congress on Aging in 1982, and later that year by UN General Assembly.
20 years later UN adopted the Madrid International Plan of Action on Aging, which is called to answer the opportunities and challenges of aging population in the 21st century.
The theme of the anniversary in 2012 is "Longevity: Shaping the Future”.
