Two Sessions: China’s top political events set to kick off Monday
WorldNearly 3,000 Chinese lawmakers are now gathering in Beijing for the upcoming session of the National People's Congress (NPC), the country’s legislature and highest organ of power. The session will open on March 5. A day before the session, on March 4, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political advisory body, will hold its annual session to advise and put proposals for political and social issues to NPC members. Liu Jieyi, spokesperson for the second session of the CPPCC National Committee, briefed the press on the session on Sunday.
Liu Jieyi said that the CPPCC members will continue to focus on advancing the country’s modernization to achieve development goals. Announcements at the annual CPPCC and NPC sessions, known collectively as the Two Sessions, include the economic development goals which are expected to be unveiled in the government report which usually features GDP growth targets, inflation, employment, foreign trade, investment and other areas.
"New productive forces," a new initiative in China’s politics which refers to productive forces stemming from sci-tech breakthroughs and innovation, is also expected to be under the spotlight.
