Germany’s Baerbock calls on Iran for ‘maximum restraint,’ calls Hamas 'terrorist organisation’
WorldGerman Foreign Minsiter Annalena Baerbock on Wednesday (July 31) called for restraint to avoid further escalation of the conflict in the Middle East following the assassination of Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Reuters reports.
“Any decision taken now could ease the situation or inflame it further. I therefore again call on all responsible parties, especially on Iran, to use maximum restraint and to deescalate in the interest of the people in the region.
Hamas is a terrorist organisation that has carried out countless cruel and deadly attacks on Israel. The central issue now is to prevent a regional conflagration and not plunge the entire region into chaos," Baerbock said in a news conference.
Baerbock said any decision made now could ease the situation or inflame it further and called on all parties in the conflict to "exercise maximum restraint and de-escalate in the interest of the people in the region."
“The worst scenario for almost everyone in Lebanon right now would be a new war. I was assured of that during my talks there again and again, by the head of government, by the foreign minister and also by the army chief. They made clear that the Lebanese government and the overall majority of people in Lebanon do not want war. I underlined clearly that the attacks by Hezbollah on Israel must finally, finally end.”
