European Union continues to address to Azerbaijan with the calls for justice
Location
Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, and Stefan Füle, the Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy, expressed their concern about the arrests of the head of the “Musafat” party Tofiq Yaghublu and the head of the “Republican alternative” party Ilgar Mamedov in Azerbaijan, ITAR-TASS informs.
The representatives of the European Union called on the Azerbaijani government to “assure quick, just, transparent and independent examination of the accusation” and at the same time “reserve themselves from the hampering of the actions of journalists and political activists experiencing their basic rights and freedoms”.
Ashton and Füle called on Baku to review the indictment presented against the peaceful demonstrators of January 26 and “assure the appropriate examination of the cases of demonstrators and the participants of the January actions in Izmaili at the same time guaranteeing the appropriate conditions for the convicts”.
The representative of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Internal Affairs Elman Abdulaev named the call a pressure on the investigation and said that such as pressure on the investigation process is unacceptable. He considered the approach of the European Union as an unfair and non-objective. “We are sorry that some of the officials of the European Union in assessing the situation in our country distort it and give non-objective and unjust appraisal. It causes wonder and regret to us” – said Abdulayev.
