"The Guardian": Prime Minister John Key`s leading party won in the parliamentary elections in New Zealand.

Saturday`s early results in New Zealand's general election indicate that popular Prime Minister John Key's National Party is teetering on the edge of having enough votes to govern alone.

With about 10 percent of the vote counted, the National Party is winning 49 percent, which would give it a thin majority of 62 seats out of a total 121. If National were to fall below the majority threshold, it would need to collaborate with other parties to form a government.

In other early results, the Labour party is getting 27 percent and the Green party 10 percent.

It appears the New Zealand First party could return to parliament after making a late charge in the campaign. The party has 6.7 percent of the vote in early results, above the minimum 5 percent threshold needed.
