December 1st is the World AIDS Day.
Society
The World AIDS Day has a significant contribution to drawing the attention of the public to the issue. AIDS that announced about its existence 30 years ago has become the challenge to the development of humanity and the HIV infection has received nature of pandemic and neither of the states of the world escaped it.
The HIV/AIDS issue is up-to-dated in Armenia as well. From 1988 till 2011, December 1, 1136 cases of HIV infection and 260 cases of HIV/AIDS have been registered among the RA citizens. The assessment of the HIV/AIDS situation testifies that about 2500 people with HIV are living in the republic. The AIDS Day is another occasion to speak about the issue.
The experience of many countries, including Armenia, shows that thanks to the purposeful, complex events it is possible to combat the epidemic. In our country wide scale works are being carried out for effective confrontation of the HIV/AIDS, smoothing the consequences of the epidemic. In this respect an important step was national program of combating HIV/AIDS approved by the government in 2007 for 2007-2011. The time of action of the program ends this year.
The prevention of HIV infection is a complicated issue for the solution of which the social element must also be taken into consideration. It is necessary to fight against such phenomena like poverty, unemployment, prostitution, drug-addiction and continue improving the quality of medical services.
